Just a brief update
about 3 years ago – Tue, Jan 26, 2021 at 03:23:55 PM

Had a brief vacation over the last two months to reset.

Players guide and creature feature PDF are coming shortly. Using DrivethruRPG for softback, waiting on the test file. Economically and logistically it makes distribution easier.

Several updates ago many of you suggested a few printers. I am to receive a few those this week for the hardcovers. I'll make a decision from there.

Happy Late New Year. More soon.

Happy Moon Festival Everyone!
over 3 years ago – Fri, Oct 02, 2020 at 07:28:17 AM

As the title says, happy Moon Festival everyone.

After the last update I figured it might be best to hire a sensitivity writer consultant or two based on the current world. So I did. This has obviously put us even further behind schedule (more than we already are) and over budget (which we already were). However I felt it was best to eliminate certain cultural references and narrow the focus of the campaign setting. The setting it self was very broad, trying to incorporate everything from eastern Asia. We reverted the ideas behind the concept of the book and made it more to the Anime and Fiction that inspired it (as listed in the original description of the Kickstarter).

With help of the sensitivity writer consultants I feel we cleaned up the writing to be sharper. This is still a campaign inspired by Dynasty Warriors and L5R RPG, while having flashy duels like Samurai Champloo and able to tell stories like the Water Margin

The feedback made it to me yesterday and I'm working on finishing it all up. Thank you for your patience.

Dawn of an Empire
almost 4 years ago – Mon, Jun 08, 2020 at 02:22:36 AM

If all goes right, next Sunday will (hopefully) mark the birth of the San Empire from idea to PDF concept. Over the last month when time has allowed it, I have combed each page with the edits that Shelly sent over mid-last month. During this process, some expansion happened to the Edge section; modifications to each Trope for balance, species write ups cleaned, a few more factions written and a lot of anime consumed.

Doing this has left the first chapter of world history unbalanced. There are continuity of story/timeline errors that needed correcting, cutting, shortening and growth to some areas of interest. Over the next week, I will be reinforcing the foundation of the world with what developed from the other chapters. Also in part, correcting some layout issues on a test pdf print upload. In addition, I am revising the martial schools listings and how each one interacts with the other. A lot to do in the coming week.

So what’s the rundown on each chapter of the book?

  • Introduction: Themes, ideas, inspiration.
  • Chapter 1: The San Empire. This is what I am working to correct. Will cover snips of history and general daily life. We combined the traditional “daily life in XX” Chapter and the world setting chapter together. The book is focused on the Empire overall and not set in a specific region. I wanted to encourage you to play in all the sandbox of the world, not just Imperial City. Each in-depth area culture will be covered in future onesheets or books.
  • Chapter Two: Hero Creation. All the fun of creating the character. Concepts, Clan write ups, Tropes, Hindrances and Edges. This is the major chunk of the book.
  • Chapter 3: Gear. Common equipment you may not find in the core book, Armor, Weapons and Gliders.
  • Chapter 4: Setting Rules. New skills, Martial Arts and Unarmed Mastery, Chi, Dueling, and the Honor (reputation) system.
  • Chapter 5: Chi Techniques. The rules and regulations on using the Chi system and Chi Techniques in place of Powers and Power Points. Also list Chi Techniques (over 35+ to choose from). Think Jutsu from Naurto or Basilisk.
  • Chapter Six: Tour of the Empire. This is a general rundown of each notable village, region, and some minor history. It’s a whirlwind tour of the lands.
  • Chapter Seven: Who you know. Factions, Minor Clans, adversaries and the like.

This closes out the update. Off to correct the timeline.

Final edits have Arrived!!
almost 4 years ago – Mon, May 18, 2020 at 02:02:48 PM

Late yesterday I posted on both my Twitter feed and our Facebook page a brief message stating the final edits have come in.

Around 8pm CST last night, I received an email from Shelly with an attachment. The attachment was a word document containing the last of the edits for Art of War.

I will be spending the next week or two getting the master file updated. Final phase.

TLDR: First Editor back on board, almost done. Read below.
almost 4 years ago – Sun, Apr 19, 2020 at 08:23:51 PM

Hello Everyone,

Thank you so much for your patience. Things out of my control and under legal advisement I have not been able to post an update until this past week. Not so short story below.

Transparency: I pay editors half up front and the rest upon accepted completion. This was as per the standard contract I use for editors, spelled out clear and articulated writing without legal mumbo jumbo clouding exactly what it means. No contract begins work until both parties have signed. There are some fluctuations with this for those you have worked with before in an established relationship.

December 31, I was able to post an update stating we were not far behind in getting the final edit to everyone. After reviewing the work of the second editor, it did not stand up to the contractual obligations promised. There was to say, a lack of editing on a document I KNOW needed editing. With the second editor refusing to provide future revisions to a document that was not fully edited, I refused to pay the second half. As the work was less than halfway completed. After a night of sleep and speaking with a fellow publisher, I paid an additional quarter of the obligation. So the second editor received 3/4 compensation for (in my humble opinion) incomplete work.

On January 13, 2020 Amora Game received a litigation letter for a civil suit from a law firm based in the state where the second editor calls home. We were being sued for “breach of contract” on terms of payment. My legal counsel advised a cease of all work in regards to Art of War. A copy of what was received; all email interactions, notifications of payments sent, copies of the contract, and current working files, etc were compiled.

I’m in Missouri, the suit was filed four states away where the former second editor lives. This would require travel, legal fees and other things with money not in the expected budget. I buckled down and was going to make it happen if I had too. Lisa, the level 15 Lawyer, works for a national firm that focuses on legal IP issues. She was able to direct us to a coworker. They had copies of everything and with luck we didn’t travel. But we were still advised not to publish or make any social media comments until it was resolved.

February: Shelly was ready to get back to work. She reached out to me and I filled her in. She came back on to handle the RE-editing the second editor did not finish. Court date set for March 17. Still advised not to publish an update or say anything on social media. Start work on a copy of the file to further progress.

March & COVID-19: Local print house I use for hardback copies shuts down operations due to pandemic. Shelly turns in first of the second half. I turn over the “benders” that I was finally happy with and playtested. Started effort to find another printer. May have to go through DrivethruRPG who works with Lightning Source as a printer. March 17 comes and goes, opposing council filed a continuous due to pandemic. Still advised not to update.

April: Pandemic and stress on keeping day job. April 14 - Tele-court between councils and judge. Judge rules in favor of defendant. Civil suit resolved. I can post.

There it is in not so brief detail. That’s been the last four months of life for Amora Game. Amora Game has not published anything in over a year and a half. I’m ready to get this done, out the door, and off my plate probably as much as you all are for receiving it. Shelly is finishing soon and we will be out to the public with PDFs after that. Expect me to go back to weekly updates and logistics for working out all print features.
